2021-2022 Update

2021-2022 Update
2021-2022 UpdateDr. Nichols’ update to New Kent Families regarding the 2021 - 2022 School Year:

This time last year, our school division was in the process of navigating an unanticipated closure due to COVID-19.  We have remained focused on providing our students the best possible experience while successfully implementing many steps to maintain the health and safety of our students and staff.

As we close this year, we wanted to provide an update on our current plans for the start of school in the fall.  Plans may be adjusted based on factors outside of our control;  however, we wanted to share our plans as they stand today.  Our school division’s plan is to provide in-person instruction to all students five days a week, beginning with the first day of school on September 7, 2021.

We expect that we will continue with many of the mitigation strategies that have yielded success this school year.  That said, many unknowns remain, and we are still several months away from the start of the 2021-22 academic year.  Please know that we will provide additional details regarding the specifics of any mitigation efforts (masking, physical distancing, transportation, health screening, etc.) as decisions are made in the future.

There is no substitute for in-person learning.  We plan to prioritize the in-person experience for both our students and our staff.  Should a virtual learning option be made available to students, we do not expect that it will follow the same structure as it has this year.  If virtual learning is made available, families would make a year-long, binding commitment to that instructional approach.  Any virtual learning option for families who have students in kindergarten through twelfth grade will likely not be delivered by our teachers.  Virtual instruction will likely be delivered, instead, through a contracted vendor such as Virtual Virginia.

Thank you for the critical role you have played this year.  We are thankful for your flexibility, partnership, and support.  Please continue to follow our School Board’s monthly meetings, our website, Facebook page, and our other communication methods regarding the work of our school division.  We will provide additional updates over the next few months as decisions are made regarding the 2021-22 school year.
